“I’m an artist, and if you give me a tuba, I’ll bring you something out of it”“
John Lennon. Revista Rolling Stone Magazine
When I was 6 years old and in the Sanfermín fiestas I discovered the most wonderful musical instrument in the world.
Except for its beautiful sound and imposing aesthetic presence, I was absolutely unaware of everything about it, even its name.
I got this information just two months later. In a small room in the music school of my village, “El Boli”, head of studies and trumpet teacher, had the task of discovering which instrument I had chosen. At that time my shyness was extreme and Jesus “el Boli” was not to take a word out of me. To achieve his purpose, he used a book with pictures of musical instruments, he pointed at me one by one, and I shook my head. When the book was about to come to an end I pointed out my choice. Jesus could not hold back his laughter, but when he perceived my seriousness he pulled himself together and said to me
This instrument is called a Tuba! It is very big… but there is a kind of tuba for children, it is called a Euphonium (bombardino in Spanish language)!
It seemed to me that this was in accord with what I was, and it sounded perfect to me.
So when I was 6 years old I began to study at the Luis Morondo Conservatory in Barañain, my hometown. It was precisely there where the love for music was born and which I am still processing today. My studies took me from there to Pamplona and later to Barcelona. And thanks to the tuba I was able to play in important auditoriums with groups such as the National Youth Orchestra of Spain-JONDE, the Symphony Orchestra of Navarra-OSN, the Youth Orchestra of Euskadi-EGO or the professional bands of Pamplona and Vitoria-Gasteiz.
